Vilar Formoso is a Portuguese village, headquarters of the small parish of Vilar Formoso, in the Municipality of Almeida, a parish with an area of 15.14 km² and 1791 inhabitants (2021 census), thus having a population density of 118.3 inhabitants. /km².
The town is a population cluster made up of two centers separated by the Tourões river. The nucleus located further south is the most recent and developed from the 19th century with the construction in 1892 of the Beira Alta Line, which initially connected the border to Figueira da Foz, but currently connects the border to Pampilhosa.
Vilar Formoso is the main land entry point into Portugal. More than five million people use this crossing point every year, via the highway and railway. The majority of imports/exports carried out via land pass through the Vilar Formoso border, to and from Portuguese territory.
It has numerous road accesses such as: the A25 which connects Vilar Formoso–Guarda–Viseu–Aveiro; the N16 which serves as an alternative to the A25 motorway; and the N332 which connects Vila Nova de Foz Côa–Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo–Almeida–Vilar Formoso–Sabugal–Penamacor–Idanha-a-Nova.
However, through the semi-detached Spanish town of Fuentes d´Oñoro it has the following road access: the A62 which connects Fontes de Onor–Cidade Rodrigo–Salamanca–Valladolid–Palencia–Burgos; and the N620, which serves as an alternative to the A62 motorway.
The scenic surroundings of Vilar Formoso are marked by the typical landscape of the Meseta Central, it is the oldest relief unit on the Iberian Peninsula and occupies most of its surface.
This is marked by granite, the contrasting mountain climate and its pure, cold air that allows curing and the manufacture of smoked meat.
At a hydrographic level, it is part of the Douro river basin, whose closest tributary is the Côa river, which is just 7 km away.
Ribeira de Tourões runs through the interior of the town and through the parish, which is a tributary, to the north, of the river Águeda.
It was also an area historically used for mining, witnessed by the presence of the so-called Minas de S. João, where tungsten and tin were extracted, which were intensely explored during the Second World War, destined for the export of ore. wolfram for the belligerent powers (Nazi Germany and the United Kingdom).
