- History of Gouxaria Farm
This property belonged to the Crown estates. Around 1460 it was leased to some farmers according to this letter from King D.
- Afonso V who says: Dom Afonso V, by the grace of God, King of Castella de León, of Portugal, Toledo, Galicia, of the town of Córdoba and Murcia, Jaém and the Algarves, all close to the sea of Africa and Daljazira and Gibraltar, Lord of Biscay and Molinar. To all those who see this letter, know that I rented our “Reguengo dalmeirim” which is called Terruge and the lands we own from Santo Agostinho in the fields of Santarém in our Kingdom of Portugal, to Vasco Palha Cavalleiro, Lopo Dias, João Dias and João Gonçalo Folgana Palha, farmers and residents of the city of Santarém, for a period of 21 years.
But, six years before the end of this contract, a “Convention and Mercy Contract” was signed with Vasco Palha, 1st Lord of Gouxaria, on October 12, 1475. This contract would extend to 2 people after him and the income was a certain amount of different cereals.
- After him we have the 2nd Lord of Gouxaria, his son Francisco Palha, married to D. Maria de Sousa. They had a daughter called Leonor Palha who married Dom Manuel de Mascarenhas (1480-1546). She became the 3rd Lady of Gouxaria. From his marriage to D. Manuel Mascarenhas was born D. Fernando de Mascarenhas (1530-1578) 4 Lord of Gouxaria and who married D. Filipa Silva. He was killed in action in the battle of Alcácer-Quibir.
- His son Dom Manuel Mascarenhas (1550-1607) was the 5th Lord of Gouxaria. He married Dona Francisca Ataíde, daughter of Dom Nuno Manuel and Dona Joana de Ataíde. Cardinal Dom Henrique extends this contract for another 8 lives.
The 6th Lord of Gouxaria is Dom Fernando de Mascarenhas who married D. Maria de Noronha. His son Dom João Mascarenhas, married to Dona Madalena de Castro, becomes the 7th Lord of Gouxaria and 1st Marquis of Fronteira.
Dom Fernando Mascarenhas (1665-1729) was the 2nd Marquis of Fronteira and the last Lord of Gouxaria (8). He married D. Joana Leonor Toledo Mendes.
Another four generations of the Mascarenhas family passed as tenants of this property, but in 1834 with the victory of the Liberals against the Miguelistas, all the Crown's lands and all the lands of the religious orders were confiscated by the “Public Treasury” and this includes this Gouxaria property.
- In 1846 Dom José Trazimundo Mascarenhas Barreto, 7th Marquis of Fronteira, acquired these lands and many others, bringing Gouxaria back to the Mascarenhas family.
The last Mascarenhas to own this property was Dom Francisco de Mascarenhas (08-02-1926-) a very famous bullfighter who inherited it from his father Dom Alexandre Mascarenhas who inherited it from his father Dom José Maria Mascarenhas. The famous palace of Fronteira and Alorna, in Lisbon, passed to his cousin Dom Fernando de Mascarenhas who inherited the lineage of the house, becoming the 11th Marquis of Fronteira and Alorna.
