The oldest human settlement in Figueiró dos Vinhos was a pre-Roman settlement in a place called "o Castelo", whose toponym indicates the possibility of the existence of a Castro on a high hill from where you can see the town and most of the surrounding territory. The Chapel of Madre de Deus located there, on a quartzite outcropping, demonstrates its antiquity. In 1135 it was part of the Herdade do Pedrógão (Hereditate Petrogonum), granted by Afonso Henriques as prince of Portugal (portugalensium prínceps) Uzbert et Monioni Martini
D. Pedro Afonso granted a charter to Figueiró in 1204. In 1514, D. Manuel I gave it a new charter, now called Figueiró dos Vinhos.
The town was designed between the "cimo da vila", the highest part, and the main square. It is this ensemble that forms the Historical Center of Figueiró dos Vinhos and where some original typicism of the medieval and five hundred year old architecture is maintained, visible in the layout of the buildings and in the granite door and window frames. With the beginning of the 20th century, the county gained national notoriety. Its scenic beauty and rurality attracted the painters José Malhoa and Manuel Henrique Pinto, who made this region the archetype of the naturalist current.
