São Marcos da Serra, a beautiful authentic and traditional parish in the centre of the Algarve, in the south of Portugal.

São Marcos da Serra is located in the north of the municipality of Silves, with a population of 1,366 inhabitants (2011 census) on an area of 154.9 km2.

The parish is located between the Serra de Monchique and the Serra do Caldeirão (GPS 37.21 North and 8.22 West).

To the north it borders the province of Alentejo, and to the south it is approximately 30 km from the Algarve coast.

The village's patron saint is São Marcos, the writer of the oldest and shortest gospel in the Bible.

The village of São Marcos da Serra, with its whitewashed houses and steep narrow streets, is a typical mountain village of the Algarve. The village has several gardens, where you can enjoy beautiful views of the mountains. The Ribeira de Odelouca curves around the village and ends at the Odelouca dam.

As you walk through the village, one of the first things you will notice is the noria and the donkey. These types of wells are still quite common on the land, although nowadays there are no donkeys that work with this mechanism. The noria was introduced here by the Moors, who were specialists in irrigating the crops.

The Mother Church stands proudly on top of São Marcos da Serra and dates back to the early 17th century.
